![]() Lowry noted that many composers dream of having one of their songs "enter into the Christmas system, like a 'Sleighbells' or a 'White Christmas.'" Radio releases were recorded by Clay Aiken, Natalie Cole, David Phelps and New Zealand's Hayley Westenra, to name just a few. The first was Michael English, but there were also duets by Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening, and Wynonna Judd and Kenny Rogers. Buddy turned it into a song."īill and Gloria Gaither told Lowry that, of their many compositions, none have equaled the success of "Mary, Did You Know?" Dozens of artists have recorded it. ![]() He called Lowry and sang it over the telephone. Greene took only until the following Monday to finish the song. He asked Greene if he would put music to the words. The lyrics became a project Lowry brought back out of a drawer and worked on for years, until one Friday when he was on a tour bus and told songwriter Buddy Greene he had written some "questions for Mary." We read that the word became flesh, and it was just a very powerful thought, to look at those little hands of Jesus that had scooped out oceans, land and rivers." He said, "I wanted to ask her what it was like to raise God. Instead, he wound up writing monologues reflecting on well-known Christmas songs.Īn exception was a monologue he began writing about Mary. ![]() When his pastor asked in the mid-1980s if he would write a Christmas musical for their church, Lowry recalled, "Not knowing I couldn't, I said I would." "I'm guessing he answered that prayer with 'Mary, Did You Know?" "I remember asking the Lord when I was a kid to let me do something, someday, that would outlive me," Lowry said Monday. And the hit Christmas song "Mary, Did You Know?" opened the eyes of those who knew nothing about Lowry's ability to compose. He sings baritone in the Gaither Vocal Band, the concert's primary drawing card. Not only is he a Christian comedian, but he also is the only one willing to take on leader Bill Gaither, even to the point of cracking wise about Gaither's hair.
